Gemini UTM Tracking: Measure Your AI Traffic Now

Google’s conversational tab, AI Mode, has expanded to over 200 countries and 35+ languages. In response to growing publisher demands for tracking, Google Gemini now includes standard UTM parameters on referral links. SEOs can now properly attribute incoming traffic from Gemini responses within analytics tools like Google Analytics 4 instead of having it drop into dark or direct traffic.

AI Mode’s global expansion

Google’s conversational AI tab—AI Mode—is now available in over 200 countries and territories, covering 35+ languages and regional variants. This expansion represents a significant shift in Google’s search strategy: conversational interfaces are now a primary search entry point, not an experimental feature.

Users can access AI Mode directly from the Google Search interface, asking follow-up questions, requesting clarifications, and receiving multi-turn responses in a conversational format. AI Mode integrates real-time search data, multimodal content (images, videos, structured data), and citations linking back to publisher websites.

For publishers, this global rollout means a new traffic source is now actively driving referrals to their content. Unlike traditional Google Search, where page position and CTR are relatively stable, AI Mode traffic patterns are less understood and harder to measure—unless proper tracking infrastructure is in place.

UTM parameters: solving the attribution gap

Previously, when Google Gemini or AI Mode referenced a website and included a link, that traffic often appeared as “direct” or unattributed in analytics because referrer headers were not consistently passed. This created a major data blind spot: publishers could not measure how much traffic AI Mode was actually sending them.

Google now automatically appends standard UTM parameters to referral links within AI Mode responses. Links now include parameters such as utm_source=gemini, utm_medium=referral, and utm_campaign=ai_mode, making traffic attribution in Google Analytics 4 straightforward and accurate.

This change enables publishers to: properly segment AI Mode traffic from organic web search traffic in GA4 dashboards, measure conversion rates and user behaviour specific to AI referrals, track which pages receive the most AI citations and recommendations, understand whether AI Mode users convert differently than traditional search users, and optimize content strategy based on which topics and formats drive AI citations.

What the UTM structure looks like

Referral URLs from AI Mode will follow patterns such as: example.com/page?utm_source=gemini&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=ai_mode. In Google Analytics 4, these parameters populate the acquisition report’s source/medium dimension, allowing segmentation alongside other traffic channels.

Publishers can create custom segments in GA4 to isolate Gemini traffic, build reports comparing AI Mode referrals to organic web search, set up conversion goals specific to AI referrals, and monitor trends in AI citations over time. Custom events can also be created to track behaviour patterns unique to AI-sourced users.

Why this matters for SEO and content strategy

AI Mode citations represent a different user intent signal than traditional web search. A user asking a conversational question in AI Mode is often seeking a curated summary, comparison, or step-by-step explanation rather than conducting keyword-based searching.

Content that performs well in AI Mode often includes detailed explanations, structured comparisons, original research, transparent methodology, and first-party testing. Long-form guides, tutorials, reviews with clear criteria, and how-to content tend to receive more citations than thin landing pages or keyword-optimized articles without depth.

For affiliate publishers, this means optimization strategy should shift: instead of chasing individual keyword rankings, focus on creating content so useful and unique that AI systems naturally cite it as a trusted source. This requires original research, transparent review methodology, documented testing, and clear explanation of decision criteria.

Setting up tracking in Google Analytics 4

Most GA4 implementations will automatically capture the UTM parameters without additional setup. However, publishers should verify that their GA4 account is tracking UTM parameters correctly and create custom reports to segment AI Mode traffic.

Steps include: confirm that the GA4 measurement ID is correctly installed on all pages, verify that acquisition reports populate with “gemini” as a source value, create a custom segment for source equals gemini, build a custom report comparing AI Mode referrals to other traffic channels, set conversion goals and segment them by source to measure AI-specific conversion rates, and monitor this data over time to understand seasonal patterns and content performance trends.
