GEO Strategy: Get Your Content Cited by AI Search

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the emerging discipline of optimizing content to be cited and recommended by AI search systems like Google Gemini, ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity. Unlike traditional SEO—which aims for top keyword rankings—GEO targets being recognized as an authoritative source and cited in AI-generated summaries. Here’s how to optimize for AI search visibility.

The difference between SEO and GEO

Traditional SEO: Optimize for ranking #1 for a specific keyword. Traffic comes when users click your link in search results.

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO): Optimize for being cited in AI-generated responses. Traffic comes when AI systems reference and link to your content within their answer to the user.

These strategies overlap but have distinct priorities. A page ranking #1 for “best running shoes” may not be cited in an AI response about running shoes because the AI prioritizes content with original testing data, transparent methodology, and expert authority—not just high ranking volume.

How AI systems decide what to cite

AI systems cite sources based on several factors: authority and expertise (Is the author or site recognized as an expert in this field?), original research or data (Did this source conduct original testing, research, or testing, or are they summarizing others?), transparency of methodology (Is the testing process clearly explained?), recency and update frequency (Is the content current?), verifiable claims (Can facts be checked?), and direct relevance to the user’s specific question.

Importantly, ranking #1 for a keyword does not automatically result in AI citations. An affiliate review site ranking #1 for “best casinos” may not be cited if the AI recognizes the site lacks original operator testing or transparent methodology. A smaller site with documented testing and transparent methodology may receive more citations.

Seven GEO optimization tactics

1. Invest in original research and testing

AI systems prioritize content with original data. Affiliate and review sites gain GEO visibility by conducting original testing: testing casino withdrawal processes and documenting actual times, testing bonus terms to verify wagering requirements, testing betting interface usability, testing payout accuracy.

Pages that contain phrases like “we tested,” “we verified,” “we documented,” and “our findings show” are more likely to be cited than pages summarizing others’ research without original data.

2. Make methodology transparent and visible

Explain your testing process, sample size, timeline, and verification sources. For affiliate content: “We verified bonus terms from XYZ Casino’s terms page on [date]” is more citable than “XYZ Casino offers a 100% bonus.”

Include a “Methodology” section on comparison pages that explains: how you selected operators or products for comparison, what criteria you evaluated, how you tested each claim, when you last updated information, and how users can verify your findings.

3. Build author expertise and authority

AI systems consider author credentials. Pages bylined by “Aeden Manell — Digital Marketer, SEO Specialist, Web Developer” with an author bio explaining experience receive more citation weight than anonymous author pages.

Build author authority by: creating author bio pages with credentials and expertise, linking author profiles across your site, maintaining consistent bylines and author branding, building recognizable expertise in specific niches (GEO weight increases when you demonstrate deep domain knowledge).

4. Structure content for AI extraction

AI systems use headings, lists, tables, and structured data to understand content hierarchy and extract relevant information for citations. Content organized with clear headings, bulleted lists, comparison tables, and schema markup is easier for AI to cite accurately.

Layout matters: A poorly formatted page with valuable research may not be cited if the AI struggles to extract and understand the information structure. A well-structured page with the same research is more citable.

5. Implement schema markup for discoverability

AI systems use schema markup (structured data) to understand page content quickly. Operator reviews marked with AggregateRating schema, operator comparison tables marked with Table schema, and research conclusions marked with appropriate schema help AI systems identify and cite your content.

For affiliate sites: implement BreadcrumbList (navigation structure), Product or ReviewedEntity (for products/operators), AggregateRating (for ratings), Thing (for definitions), and DataSet (if you published original data).

6. Optimize for specific questions, not keywords

AI users ask conversational questions (“How do I know if a casino is safe?”) rather than keyword searches (“safe casinos”). Content optimized for these specific question-intent formats is more citable.

Create content that directly answers specific questions: “How do I verify a casino’s license?” with a section listing regulators and how to check them; “What’s the difference between a 100% and 200% deposit bonus?” with clear examples; “How long do casino withdrawals usually take?” with your tested data.

7. Build topical authority, not scattered content

AI systems recognize sites with deep expertise in specific verticals. A site with 50 well-researched pages about UK casinos has more GEO authority than a site with 200 shallow pages about different betting topics.

Build GEO authority by: creating clusters of related content on specific topics, interlinking related pages to build topical depth, maintaining consistent expertise across pages, updating information regularly to demonstrate ongoing engagement with the topic.

GEO metrics to track

Gemini referral traffic: Use GA4 to track utm_source=gemini traffic and identify which pages receive the most citations and traffic.

Citation frequency: Monitor how often your content is cited across AI systems. Tools like Gemini search results pages and Perplexity citations can be tracked manually or via specialized GEO tools.

Comparison with search rankings: Track keyword rankings for pages receiving AI citations. Sometimes high-citation pages rank lower than competitors, indicating GEO is a distinct traffic source.

Conversion rate from AI users: Compare conversion rates of Gemini referral traffic vs. organic search traffic. AI users may convert differently than traditional search users.

Common GEO mistakes

  • Unverified claims: AI systems deprioritize content with unsupported claims. Every factual statement should be verifiable.
  • Hidden methodology: If your testing process or data sources are unclear, AI systems may not cite your content. Make methodology visible.
  • AI-generated content without fact-checking: Pages generated by AI without human verification are deprioritized by AI systems themselves (ironic, but important).
  • Shallow content: AI systems cite authoritative sources, not summary pages. Invest in original research and depth.
  • No author authority: Anonymous content is cited less frequently than content backed by recognizable author credentials.

GEO and SEO together

GEO and traditional SEO are complementary. A page optimized for both keyword ranking and AI citations will capture traffic from both search channels. A comparison page optimized for GEO—with original testing, transparent methodology, author authority—will likely rank well for its target keywords and receive AI citations simultaneously.
